Clamping large areas
When considering large-volume workpieces such as aircraft turbine blades, engine parts made of titanium, or structural components made of thin aluminum, it is hard to imagine being able to clamp them securely. For particularly long or bulky parts, WITTE offers a modular system consisting of suction cups and a vacuum plate. The FLIP-POD vacuum clamping system is the specialist for large tasks. Theoretically, this system could provide clamping surfaces the size of a football field, as there are no size limitations. However, in practical use, systems are typically designed to a maximum size of 4 x 11 meters, corresponding to the working range of the currently largest milling machines. The FLIP-POD vacuum clamping system is primarily recommended for milling, drilling, and tapping on large workpieces made of wood, plastic, glass, metal, sand casting, or extrusion profiles. Damage to the workpieces, which can occur with traditional vises or clamping jaws, is nearly eliminated with this system.
The FLIP-POD system consists of a vacuum plate with a continuous grid into which so-called suction cup-like pods are inserted. These form the contact point with the component, allowing it to be suctioned and thereby clamped. There are half and three-quarter pods, eccentric pods, and height-adjustable pods. The height can be adjusted up to 50 millimeters and is protected against accidental shifting by a special locking mechanism. The clamping and releasing of the component are activated at the push of a button.
